Tools: Hupa didn’t like to go to war but they had bows and arrows, spears, and stone knives. Also there was wooden armor. The Hupa were known for their basketry and they used a twining technique. Women used mussel shells as spoons. The men made things from stone and shell for shaping chests. The women wove cradles for the babies. To protect themselves they wore heavy shirts made out of elkhide. The baskets were decorated with grass and fern. When making baskets the women did most of the weaving because the men were out hunting food for them to eat. Hazel branches were used very often when making the baskets. Some pieces that are cut from tree root, they wove it between the hazel branches to make the basket very firm and strong. The women also wove caps to wear over their heads. Also, they wove special ceremonial items to wear during ceremonies. This is the way they made baskets: First they started with the base and wove the slats together in an over-under pattern. They did that step as high as they wanted the basket. When they wove it the height they wanted it, they folded the last slat back to the previous slat they did. That is how they made baskets by weaving.
